Robinson Crusoe island is the largest island of the Chilean Juan Fernandez archipelago.  It is situated 674 kilometers west of South America in the South Pacific Ocean.  It is also known as Desert Island.  It has a sub tropical climate moderated by the cold Humboldt current, which flows to the east of the island, and the southeast trade winds.

It owes its fame to a pirate dispute in 1704.  After a fierce fight with the captain of the buccaneer ship, on which he navigated, the sailor Alexander Selkirk was abandoned on the uninhabited island.  He was rescued after four years and four months and returned to Great Britain.  His story, though was embellished by the writer Daniel Defoe, who turned Selkirk into the literary hero Robinson Crusoe.

To date, it has a population of about 500 mostly living in the village of Juan Bautista.  The community maintains a rustic serenity and offers a level of connection with nature.  Their main trade is the spiny lobster.  There are few vehicles and at least three restaurants.  They have satellite Internet connection and have many television sets.  There is also a nano brewery, Cerveza Archipelago,  producing a total of 2,000 to 3,000 bottles of golden lager, amber ale and coffee-colored stout per month.

Although tourism is growing, only about 2,000 people visit the island every year.  This low number is due to the prohibitive cost of airplane tickets

On 27 of February 2010, the island was hit by a tsunami following a magnitude of 8.8 earthquake.  The tsunami was about 3 m (10 feet high) when it reached the island.  Sixteen people lost their lives, and most of the coastal village was washed away.  The only warning the islanders had came from a 12-year-old girl, who noticed the sudden drawback of the sea that presages the arrival of a tsunami wave and thereby saved many of the neighbors from harm.

At the main square, the tsunami emergency gong is noticeable.  There were also two signs pointing to a tsunami evacuation route.  One can be seen on the left side of the village and another on the right side of the village.
