Arica, First Stop In The World's Longest Country
Welcome dancers at the port of Arica.
Arica, Chile Tuesday, January 17, 2017
Arica, is our first stop in the longest country in the world. It is a port city in northern Chile. Near the center of the plaza, a path climbs up to Morro Arica Hill. It provides a sweeping view of the city and the sea. Meanwhile, there's nearby Museo Historico y de Armas War Museum. It was designed by French architect Gustave Eiffel. There's also the Gothic San Marcos Cathedral made of metal and wood dating back from 1875 also designed by Gustave Eiffel, the same man who designed the popular Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was built in 1870 and construction was completed in 1875. It was declared a national Monument in 1984, over a century after the cathedral was established.
Once arriving in Arica, you can pretty much explore anything by foot, walking through different tourist attractions as they are not far from each other. To the left of the Cathedral is the pedestrian street of Colon which is a major shopping and eating district. One can spend some time in the street of Colon where there are lots of little shops and restaurants scattered around. Here, you can get a tall beer tower called rocket. There's also a crepe restaurant called Cafe del Mar, which was air conditioned and well-priced from US$8.00. We tried the Crepe Marinero and it was the best seafood crepe we ever tasted.
