Montevideo, Uruguay Thursday, February 9, 2017

Montevideo Port is located near the most populous city in Uruguay which is the smallest country in the world. It is strategically located at the mouth of Rio Plata. Visiting Montevideo cruise port gives one the opportunity to be in the city with the highest lifestyle in South America. It was formerly a Spanish naval base during colonial times but it transferred to British influence during the early 19th century. Thus it is a city influenced by diverse traditions.

A good way to start a cultural tour is to the Main Square and Teatro Solis. The Teatro was once a prominent and world-renowned music theater. Avenida 18 de Julio is also recommended. It is lined with shops and art galleries. Here you can find antique shops, museums and little cafes that serves great coffee. Fortified with iron gates and European street lamps, verandas, the "Old City" is great for photo opportunities, for understanding the Uruguayan way of life and also for shopping.

Montevideo’s main attraction at the “Harbor Market” hosts a good range of restaurants with counters facing in towards the barbecue!

Other cultural areas to visit are the very large Congress building constructed in the early twentieth century with 52 different colors of marble. There is also the Palacio Legislativo, Catedral Matriz, Jardin Botanico, and the Memorial de los Detenidos Desaparecidos.

Since we've done the cultural tour before, we decided to visit the Puerto Mercado once again for some Uruguayan barbecue.

Barbecue including all types of meat, sausages, and organ meats.

It is a real feast for the senses. There are several restaurants with parillas (fantastic open grills) where you can choose your meat from picana (baby meat) to rib eyes to sausages. Many locals eat here and the meat are of good quality. Meat and seafood dishes are almost, always accompanied by fine wine from the vineyards of Montevideo. The prices are good too and here one can eat meat as if there's no more tomorrow!

For the atmosphere, the price and the taste, it is one place one should not miss when in Montevideo!
