Day Trip To Miyajima From Hiroshima
Itsukushima Shrine is known worldwide for its iconic "floating" torii gate. The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water.
GETTING THERE AND AROUND
Miyajima can be reached from Hiroshima in less than an hour by train and ferry or by direct boats. There is a free shuttle from the port to downtown Hiroshima JR Station.
The distance between Hiroshima Port Station and Hiroshima is 5 km. but there is a free shuttle bus available from Hiroshima Port.
From the shuttle drop off area is only a few feet away to the entrance on the Hiroshima JR Station.
Depart from Hiroshima Station Shinkansen Exit 2F Central Gate. The tram stop is at the south exit.
Follow the sign leading to the South Exit.
Take the escalator as it is to get off to the 1st floor.
Follow the signs and take the escalator to get to the tram stations.
Follow the signboard to the tram stop.
There are clear signboards that you can follow.
Signs are clear and will point you to the right direction.
You should reach the tram station in about three minutes from the time you get off the escalator.

Streetcar Departure platform where you can wait for tram No. 6 or Tram no. 2 . You can also buy your tickets at the counter.
You can use cash, transportation IC cards, 1-day pass, etc.
Hiroshima tram to Hiroshima Port.
The trip takes about 17 minutes and costs 220 yen one way (240 yen from February 2025). You can pay with cash, transportation IC cards, or a 1-day pass. Remember, the flat fare within Hiroshima city limits is 220 yen for adults and 110 yen for children.
Check the station name at the destination. Take note of your destination. Station names are announced in both Japanese and English. Take tram line 2 or 6 to Genbaku-Domu Mae.
I arrived in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome in about 20 minutes from Hiroshima Station.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945.
Walk past the Atomic Bomb Dome to go to the Motoyasubashi Pier to catch the ferry to Miyajima Island.
Motoyasubashi Pier
Go 50m from Atomic Bomb Dome towards south. Pier is under Motoyasu bridge.
The Pier is right by “Motoyasubashi-Bridge”Go down the stairs in front of the cafe.
The stairs have about 8 steps. Go down the stairs, here is the Ticket Office
Miyajima 3rd Pier It's the end of pier from Ferry terminal.
In waiting room beside the pier, please follow boarding procedures.
This ferry provides a 45-minute one-way trip between the two World Heritage sites in Hiroshima: the Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine (Miyajima). Enjoy the scenery of the transition from the river to the sea, two World Heritage sites, and the City of Water
Boats connect Miyajima directly with Hiroshima Peace Park (45 minutes, 2200 yen one way, 4000 yen round trip excluding visitor tax, 2-4 boats/hour) and with Hiroshima Port (30 minutes, 2100 yen one way excluding visitor tax, hourly). The Japan Rail Pass is not valid on these boats.
The ship goes through the river(Honkawa river /Motoyasu river) in the city, and then goes to the Hiroshima Bay. The ship will move slowly while passing through the river. You will enjoy the view of the Hiroshima city on deck .
