Ecuador, with its fishing port Manta, is now recognized as a key player on the global tuna market. Its yearly supply represents half a million tonnes (55% from landings and 45% from imports) valuing more than one billion USD.

Manta is a port City on Ecuador’s Pacific coast. It is known for its tuna-fishing industry and the catch of the fishing fleet from the city make sit a great place to enjoy seafood. It has great beaches and there are plenty of tour operators offering water sports and a variety of trips and activities. The coastline is frequently hit by big waves which has led to the city becoming a surfing destination and other water sports.
Manta has been the host for several surfing and body boarding events, with the beach at San Mateo noted for having the longest waves for surfing in the country.
Central Municipal Market is a busy market, is where the locals come to buy produce and fresh fish and meat.
With the ability to house so many big ships, it is popular stopping point for cruise ships. While the city enjoys several beaches, as you travel inland, the city becomes a dry tropical forest.
One of the popular side trips for visitors to Manta is to the nearby town of Montecristi, which is said to be the original birthplace of the Panaman hats now exported world-wide.
It is easy to navigate while you are in Manta. There are plenty of bus routes and taxis are available and are cheap. Just make sure you negotiate for the price in advance, and carry small bills.
