Panama Canal is a 436-square-mile area which spans both sides of the shipping channel. It connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is fascinating and there are so many mind-blowing facts that made it a man-made wonder of the world. From our entrance from the Atlantic Ocean, north of Colon, it was approximately a 51 mile (9 hour) journey to the Pacific Ocean exit south of Balboa. It was first opened on August 15, 1914 and on August 15, 2014 Panama, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the opening of the canal. — More than 1 million ships have crossed the canal ever since.

Panama also celebrated the Canal by an expansion project that included new locks, wider shipping lanes and bigger ports, all together worth over 5 billion dollars. The expanded 3rd canal is able to handle cargo vessels carrying 14,000- 20-foot containers, nearly three times the amount currently accommodated.

Together the canal has cut the distance from 13,000 miles to 5,200 miles and the savings in fuel, time and risks are so considerable that it makes no sense to to go around the Cape Horn. The canal handles over 13,000 ships (on average) each year. It also manages five percent of worldwide shipments, thereby connecting more than 144 routes, 1,700 ports and 160 countries thus, becoming a global trade route.
