Southernmost city in the world
It is in Argentina but you can't get to it from Argentina. Not by car, anyway. The only way to reach it without flying in, is by crossing into Chile and then taking a ferry over to the island.
Once a Penal Colony- Prisoners who were considered most dangerous were sent to this southernmost territory, where they constructed the prison themselves, as well as other infrastructure, such as the railway.
Founded by British Missionaries – In 1870 It has beaver problem- the furry animals were introduced from Canada in the 1940's to build a fur industry, which didn't work. With no natural predators, the beaver population quickly exploded and today, an estimated half a million beavers have spread out across the region and are causing havoc.
Gateway to Antarctica- It is the easiest and most popular way to reach the 7th continent at 4,649 km. The Channel is named after the boat Charles Darwin traveled on, HMS Beagle. World's southernmost ski resort and southernmost golf course and southernmost National park can be found in Ushuaia.
Home to the Train to the End of the World- The prisoners constructed a railway to help with the transport of rock, sand, timber. It was officially closed in 1950's, but a modern version of the railway was established as a tourist attraction in 1994.
Tierra del Fuego means Land of Fire. The name was given by early explorers who saw the fires on the shores of the native Yamana people.
Shopper's paradise. Duty- Free Shopping Haven. There is no sales-tax in Ushuaia and very low import-tax but the living costs are much higher in Ushuaia.
Beagle Channel is one of the three navigable passages between the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean.
Martial Glacier-it's most famous glacier is receding at a rapid rate.
