Homage To Ferdinand Magellan
Stately monument dedicated to adventurer Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer who planned the first circumnavigation of the earth.

Punta Arenas is easily walk able and just a block from the port terminal is the Plaza Munoz Gamero. Here, there are lots of locals selling their crafts from wood carved items, lapiz lazuli, knitwear and lots of alpaca sweaters.
The Magellan Memorial - You can't miss this statue. Erected in Plaza de Armas in 1920 to honor the 400th anniversary of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation voyage. It is also part of the local legend that if you touch the shiny toe of the Yamana native seated on its lower half, it is believed that you'll return to Punta Arenas.
Local cemetery - About nine blocks north of from Plaza Munoz Gamero, one can see huge crypts and mausoleum belonging to English, Portuguese, Spanish, Croatian and other colonial settlers reflecting the vast cultural diversity of the city.
Nao Victoria Museum- It is a new interactive museum that includes the full replica of the three historic ships :
Nao Victoria ship - She is one of the most famous ships in history of navigation that Ferdinand Magellan used to circumnavigate the globe along the Magellan Strait. Later, commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano, she was the only ship of the five to complete the first-time circumnavigation of the globe. Commanded by Duarte Barbosa, Nao Victoria participated in the discovery of Chile, being the first to explore the region in 1520 and discovering and naming Patagonia, Cape Virgenes, the Straits of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, the Pacific Ocean and other milestones. Replicas of weapons and ancient navigation tools are also exhibited as well as copies of documents and books relating to the historic ships and outdoor shipbuilding workshop.
James Caird was the lifeboat of the ship, Endurance and sailed form Elephant Island to South Georgia during Sir Ernest Shackleton's 19916 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The feat of the crew of James Caird is considered to be the most impressive of all global navigation.
Ancud - was the ship that under an 1843 mandate of the President of Chile, Manuel Bulnes, claimed the Strait of Magellan on behalf of Chile's newly independent government.
HMS Beagle - A British Navy exploration vessel. The most famous of her three trips was the second one under the command of Captain FitzRoy On board was the young Charles Darwin. HMS Beagle remained in the Magellan region for almost three years. She is famous for being the ship where Darwin started developing his theory of evolution.
And if you are a wildlife enthusiasts and crazy about penguins, Punta Arenas is one of the few places in South America where one can get close proximity to as many penguin colonies. One can delight in watching species of both King and Magellanic penguins in their natural environments, all of which are are only a short distance from the city.
Seno Otway is perhaps one of the easiest Punta Arenas penguin colony to visit. Seno Otway is only 37 miles (60 km) from the city, making it ideal for an afternoon tour. It is located on the vast inlet and contains around 2,500 breeding pairs who live in small burrows in the grassy sand banks bordering the water.
The best time to visit is during the afternoon when the penguins return from fishing.
