Barbados was a British territory until 1966 and remains greatly influenced by the United Kingdom.
Just outside the port gates is Pelican Village, which is made up of many quaint shops, boutiques and souvenir stores and crafts.
If you are looking for more robust shopping experience, head into downtown Bridgetown and the department stores, shops, and street vendors on Broad Street.
It is within easy walking distance from the port about 20 minutes. It is lined with stores for 4-5 blocks and there is much to look for from luxury to intimate to affordable. There is something for every taste and budget.
Around the island are beautiful beaches.
If you are not into shopping, one can take turn to relax and unwind in idyllic beaches with soft sand dunes and powdery sand. The beaches are good and varied, with the sea usually calm on the west coast and with surf in the south. Barbados also has a spectacular landscape that changes dramatically from one town to the next. From the underground caves and scenic vistas to the enhancement of swimming with the turtles, it is full of fascinating pursuits. Age-old rum distillery and Duty Free shopping all add up to the charm of this island.
