The French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe are delightfully inviting and a popular vacation spot for French sun seekers.

Although it is decidedly a French island, it is also undeniably Caribbean! Guadeloupe's people and their culture are the result of a harmonious blending of European, African and East Indian origins. A French sense of style and joie de vivre, however permeate the culture. Its hotels and restaurants are less polished than what exists in other Caribbean islands, but they are more colorful and heartfelt.

The cultural mixture becomes most evident in the unique Creole cuisine, the annual carnival, and the widely spoken local Creole language.

Five other islands belong to the archipelago of Guadeloupe while Continental Guadeloupe comprises two islands. It looks like a butterfly separated by a sea arm- La Riviere Salee.

Grand -Terre, the eastern of the two has soft rolling terrain and the climate here is dry. Sugar cane plantation farm is abundant. It has Guadeloupe's largest city, Pointe - a- Pitre. It has stretches of sensational white sand beaches and resort areas. Many restaurants here pride themselves on serving traditional Creole cuisine. They are essentially based on the subtle usage of spices and condiments. Ginger, cloves, pepper, saffron, cardamon, paprika, bay leaves, star anise just to name a few.

Basse-Terre the western island is a mountainous volcanic island. The mountain range is covered b 17,000 hectares of tropical forest, which has been declared a National Park. It has a dramatic rain forest with lots of marked paths and hiking trails. With its towering waterfalls, parks and lush vegetation, Basse-Terre is a place of outstanding natural beauty.

Guadeloupe's open -air market are a sensory treat and plays a vital part in the life of the community. They are very colorful, bursting with flavors and jam packed with goods. They are to be found in every single town. Overall, Guadeloupe is fun to explore. It is still one of the most evocative and untouched destination that offers all the beauty and wonder of a true Caribbean island.
